Easy Plumbing Repairs That Don't Require a Plumber

Jun 1

Whether it's a clogged drain or a constantly running motor, there are many simple plumbing repairs that you can do yourself that won't cost you a dime. Paul has worked in various roles from painter to freelance writer to general handyman to plumber. While some plumbing issues are inexpensive and minor, others can be catastrophic, resulting in major contents damage or structural damage.

Fixing a clogged drain

Using vinegar and baking soda to unclog a clogged drain is one method for clearing out a blockage in your toilet or sink. Once the mixture has been applied to the clog, simply pour hot water into the drain and wait for the clog to dissolve. If all else fails, call a professional plumber to fix a clogged drain that is not backed up with hair.

To clear a drain, use a wire coat hanger, which can act as a makeshift plumber's snake. Unwind the wire coat hanger using needle-nose pliers and keep the end hooked into the drain opening. After removing the wire, you can use hot water to move the debris through the pipe. If this is ineffective, try using a drain cleaning chemical or professional.

Fixing a leaking faucet

When a faucet starts to leak, you might be wondering whether you can repair the problem yourself. This task can be a bit tricky, so you may need to hire a plumber to do the job for you. The first step to fixing a leaky faucet is locating the source of the problem. You can check this by observing the way the faucet drips water. For a leaking faucet, the O-ring and washer located in the valve seat are the usual culprits. Alternatively, you can use basic vinegar to clean the inside parts of the faucet.

The next step involves removing the faucet handle. Remove the cap, if applicable. It exposes a screw that secures the handle to the valve stem. Loosen the screw with an Allen wrench and remove the handle. If the handle is attached to a valve stem, remove the set screw from underneath and then unscrew it. Turn the water supply back on and check for leaks.

Fixing a leaking water heater

One of the easiest ways to fix a leaking water heater is to flush the water heater. This will prevent sediment from building up on the bottom of the tank and corroding the inner lining. If you can't do it yourself, call a plumber to replace the drain valve or to inspect and repair the water heater. If the water heater leaks when the water is turned off, you can check for loose connections at the drain valve.

Often, water heater leaks can be identified by the presence of puddles around the tank. These puddles are often located directly underneath the water heater. Once you've determined that you have a leak, a plumber will check your unit and recommend a solution. Sometimes, a simple fix is all that's needed. But if you don't feel confident with your handy skills, it's worth hiring a plumber to perform the job.

Fixing a leaking water heater filter

Leaking water from a water heater is often caused by sediment buildup. If it is in the tank, this can eventually lead to rust and cracking. Most likely, you will need to replace your water heater. You can either call a plumber or purchase a new one. If you cannot fix the leak yourself, there are some things you can do. Here are a few steps to follow.

To get started, remove the filter housing. To remove it, you may need a small tub to sit underneath the unit. Once you have removed the filter housing, clean it thoroughly with warm water and a soft brush. Be sure to clean the O-ring thoroughly before replacing it. If there are any traces of debris, replace them with a new one. Lubricate the new ring with silicone-based grease. Make sure to screw it into the channel snugly.
